Most guides will tell you the best time to visit Munnar is September to March, and then leave it there. That’s not wrong, but it isn’t much help either — those seven months are not the same as each other, and the five months everyone tells you to avoid are not all equally worth avoiding.

We run a homestay in the hills above Kunchithanni, and we watch the year turn from the same balcony every day. Here’s what each month actually looks like.

September to November — the best of it

The monsoon has emptied itself out and the hills are as green as they get all year. Waterfalls are still full from the rain but the roads are clear. Mornings come with mist that burns off by nine, afternoons are warm without being hot, and nights need a jacket.

This is peak season for a reason, and prices reflect it. Book at least three weeks ahead for a weekend, more around any long weekend.

December to February — cold, clear and busy

Dry, bright and genuinely cold at altitude. Nights drop low enough that a campfire stops being decorative and starts being necessary. Visibility is at its best all year — this is when you get the long, clean views across the valley without haze.

The catch is Christmas and New Year. From roughly 20 December to 5 January, Munnar fills. Traffic on the main roads is slow, viewpoints are crowded, and every property in the district raises rates. If you’re coming in this window, book a month out and accept you’ll be sharing.

Mid-January to February is the sweet spot: same weather, a fraction of the crowd.

March to May — hot below, fine up here

This is when the plains get uncomfortable and everyone remembers hill stations exist. Munnar stays pleasant — warm days, cool nights — which makes April a genuinely busy month despite not being “season.”

By late May the pre-monsoon showers start rolling in during the afternoons. Mornings stay clear, so you can still trek; you just do it early and plan the afternoon indoors.

June to August — the monsoon, and why we don’t apologise for it

Here’s where we disagree with most guides.

Yes, it rains. Sometimes it rains for two days straight. Trekking gets limited, leeches are a real thing, and if your entire plan is outdoor sightseeing you’ll be frustrated.

But the monsoon is also when the hills look their best — the whole valley goes an almost unreasonable green, the waterfalls are at full force, and cloud moves through the property at eye level. Rates drop across the district. There’s nobody at the viewpoints. And sitting on a balcony watching rain come across a valley, with a cup of tea and nowhere to be, is one of the genuinely great experiences this region offers.

The trick is expectation. Come for the atmosphere, not the itinerary.

A note on where you stay

One thing worth saying: much of what makes Munnar difficult in peak season is the traffic and congestion in and around the town itself. Staying outside it — as we do, up in the hills near Kunchithanni — takes most of that problem away. You drive in when you want to see something and drive back out to quiet.
